Location: Duddell Street and Gas Lamps | Accessibility category: Historic Sites | Accessibility Information: Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps
Introduction
The granite stone steps at the southern end of Duddell Street in Central, the exact construction year of the granite stone steps cannot be verified. But from the old maps of Hong Kong, the stone steps already existed between 1875 and 1889. According to the records of the Hong Kong and China Gas Co., Ltd., the four gas street lamps at both ends of the stone steps have become the only remaining gas street lamps in Hong Kong that still provide street lighting services since 1967.
The Duddell Street gas street lamp is manufactured by Seth Company. It is a Rochester dual-lamp model. The lamp post is shorter so that it can be installed on the guardrail of the stone steps. The street lights were originally lit manually, but have now been changed to automatic operation.
